upon the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and sends blessings upon the close angels.
360 - Issue; He said: (And he shall pronounce the third takbir, and supplicate for himself, his parents, and the Muslims, and supplicate for the deceased).
If he wishes, he may say: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. Indeed, You know our return and our final abode, and indeed You are powerful over all things. O Allah, whoever among us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whoever among us You take in death, take him in death upon faith. O Allah, he is Your servant and the son of Your handmaid; he has come to You and You are the best of hosts, and we know naught but good of him. O Allah, if he was a doer of good, then reward him for his goodness, and if he was a doer of evil, then overlook his offenses. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not put us to trial after him." The obligatory is the minimum level of supplication, because the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: "When you pray over the deceased, devote your supplication sincerely to him." Recorded by Abu Dawud (3). This is fulfilled by the minimum amount of supplication, and because the intent is intercession for the deceased and praying for him, so the least of that is required. It is recommended that he prays for himself, his parents, and the Muslims. Ahmad said: There is no fixed supplication for the deceased. What al-Khiraqi mentioned is good; it combines all of that, and most of it has been narrated in the Hadith. Among that is what Abu Ibrahim al-Ashhali narrated from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—used to say when he prayed over a funeral: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our male and our female." Al-Tirmidhi (4) said: This is a hasan (good) hadith.
