Musa: "Praise be to Allah, who causes death and gives life. Praise be to Allah, who gives life to the dead. To Him belong majesty, pride, sovereignty, power, and praise, and He is over all things capable. O Allah, he is Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your handmaid. You created him, provided for him, You caused him to die, and You shall bring him to life. You know his inner state. We have come to You as intercessors for him, so accept our intercession for him. O Allah, we seek refuge in the covenant of Your neighborly protection for him, for You are possessor of faithfulness and sanctuary. O Allah, protect him from the trial of the grave and from the punishment of Hell. O Allah, if he was a doer of good, then reward him for his goodness, and if he was a doer of evil, then overlook his offenses. O Allah, he has come down to You, and You are the best of those who are sought for hospitality, poor in need of Your mercy, while You are free of any need for his punishment. O Allah, steady his speech when he is questioned, and do not test him in his grave. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not lead us astray after him."
Section: His statement, "We know nothing but good," is only said for someone from whom one has not known any evil, so that it might not be a lie. The Qadi [has narrated] (8) a hadith from Abdullah ibn al-Harith, from his father, that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—taught them the prayer over the deceased: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, those who are present and those who are absent. O Allah, Your servant and the son of Your servant has come to Your courtyard, so forgive him and have mercy upon him, and we know nothing but good." So I said, and I was the youngest of the group: "O Messenger of Allah, even if I do not know of any good?" He replied: "Do not say anything except what you know" (9). This is legislated due to the report, and because when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had a funeral praised for good in his presence, he said: "It has become incumbent [for Paradise]." فصل: وقوله: "لا نَعْلَمُ إلَّا خَيْرًا". إنَّما يَقُولُه لمن لَمْ يَعْلَمْ منه شَرًّا، لِئلَّا يكونَ كَاذِبًا. [وقد رَوَى] (٨) القاضى حَدِيثًا، عن عبدِ اللهِ بنِ الحارِثِ، عن أبِيهِ، أنَّ النَّبِيَّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- عَلَّمَهُم الصلاةَ على المَيِّتِ: "اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأَحْيَائِنَا وأَمْوَاتِنَا، وصَغِيرِنَا وكَبِيرِنَا، وشَاهِدِنَا وغَائِبِنَا، اللَّهُمَّ إنَّ عَبْدَكَ وابنَ عَبْدِكَ نَزَلَ بِفِنَائِكَ، فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، ولا نَعْلَمُ إلَّا خَيْرًا". فقلتُ، وأنا أصْغَرُ الجَمَاعَةِ: يا رسولَ اللهِ، وإن لم أعْلَمْ خَيْرًا؟ قال: "لا تَقُلْ إلَّا ما تَعْلَمُ" (٩). وإنَّما شُرِعَ هذا لِلْخَبَرِ، ولأنَّ النَّبِيَّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- لمَّا أُثْنِىَ عِنْدَه على جِنَازَةٍ بِخَيْرٍ، فقال: "وَجَبَتْ". وأُثْنِىَ على أُخْرَى بِشَرٍّ، فقال: "وَجَبَتْ". ثم قال: "إنَّ بَعْضَكُم عَلَى بَعْضٍ شَهِيدٌ (١٠) ". رَوَاه أبو دَاوُدَ، [مُتَّفَقٌ عليه] (١١). وفي حَدِيثٍ عن النَّبِيِّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، أنَّه
