This was narrated by Ibn Abi Musa. It is narrated from Ibn Umar and Anas that they used to do that. Furthermore, because it is a takbir during a state of stability, it resembles the first one, and what they (the opposing view) mentioned is not accepted. When he raises his hands, he should lower them upon finishing the takbir and place the right hand over the left, as in the rest of the prayers. Regarding what Ibn Abi Musa narrated, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prayed over a funeral and placed his right hand over his left (2).
363 - Issue; He said: (And he performs one taslim to his right)
The sunnah is to perform one taslim over the funeral. Ahmad (1)—may Allah have mercy on him—said: The taslim over the funeral is one taslim; it is from six of the companions of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and there is no disagreement in it except from Ibrahim. One taslim is narrated from Ali, Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Abu Hurayrah, Anas ibn Malik, Ibn Abi Awfa, and Wathilah ibn al-Asqa'. This was also the view of Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Abu Umamah ibn Sahl (2), al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, al-Harith, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, al-Thawri, Ibn 'Uyaynah, Ibn al-Mubarak, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, and Ishaq. Ibn al-Mubarak said: Whoever performs two taslims over the funeral is ignorant, ignorant. The Qadi (the judge) chose the view that two taslims are recommended, and one taslim suffices. This is the view of al-Shafi'i and the scholars of opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y), by way of analogy to other prayers. Our evidence is what 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib narrated, that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—performed one taslim over the funeral (3).
