(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting at the grave, and I saw his eyes streaming with tears. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kissed 'Uthman ibn Maz'un while he was dead, then raised his head while his eyes were shedding tears. Anas said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Zayd took the banner and was struck, then Ja'far took it and was struck, then 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah took it and was struck," and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were streaming. 'A'isha said: Abu Bakr entered, uncovered the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), kissed him, then wept. All of these are authentic (sahih) hadiths. Al-Umawi narrated in "Al-Maghazi" from 'A'isha that when Sa'd ibn Mu'adh died, Abu Bakr and 'Umar began to wail until their voices became indistinguishable to me. It is also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered upon Sa'd ibn 'Ubada while he was in a state of unconsciousness, and he wept, as did his companions. He said: "Do you not hear? Verily, Allah does not punish for the tears of the eye nor the sadness of the heart, but He punishes for this," and he pointed to his tongue, "or shows mercy." From him (peace and blessings be upon him), it is reported that he entered upon his son Ibrahim while he was in his death throes.
