(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw a man praying behind the row alone, and he ordered him to repeat [his prayer]. It was narrated by Abu Dawud and others. Ahmad said: The hadith of Wabisah is hasan (sound). Ibn al-Mundhir said: Ahmad and Ishaq authenticated the hadith. In another wording: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about a man who prayed behind the rows alone. He said: "He shall repeat it." Narrated by Tammam in "al-Fawa'id." And from Ali ibn Shayban, that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led them in prayer, then departed while a man was alone behind the row. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood [waiting] until the man had left, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Restart your prayer, for there is no prayer for one who is alone behind the row." Narrated by al-Athram. He said: I asked Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad]: Is the hadith of Mulazim ibn Amr—meaning this hadith—also hasan in this regard? He said: Yes. And because he violated the [prescribed] standing place, his prayer is not valid, just as if he had stood in front of the Imam. As for the hadith of Abu Bakrah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had forbidden him, saying: "Do not return [to doing that]." The prohibition necessitates corruption [of the act], and his excuse for what he did was his ignorance of its being forbidden, and ignorance has an effect in [securing] forgiveness. Furthermore, it does not necessarily follow that because it is a standing place for a woman, it is also a standing place for a man, evidenced by their difference regarding the detestability (karahah) and recommended nature of standing [in such places]. As for standing on the left side of the Imam, if there is someone on the right of the Imam, his prayer is valid; because Ibn Mas'ud prayed between Alqama and al-Aswad, and when they finished, he said: Thus I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) do. Narrated by Abu Dawud. And because the middle of the row is a standing place
