of its own kind that would suffice in its place along with something else, so it is sufficient for it on its own, just as if the increase were in the number. Imam Ahmad related in his "Musnad" and Abu Dawud in his "Sunan," with their chain of narration from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me as a collector of Zakat. I passed by a man, and when he gathered his wealth for me, I found nothing upon him in it but a bint makhad. I said to him: Give a bint makhad, for that is your zakat. He said: That is one that has no milk and cannot be ridden, but this is a young, large, fat she-camel, so take it. I said: I will not take what I have not been commanded to take, and this is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) near you; if you wish to come to him and present to him what you have presented to me, then do so. If he accepts it from you, I will accept it, and if he rejects it from you, I will reject it. He said: I shall do so. He went out with me, and he went out with the she-camel that he had presented to me, until we arrived at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said to him: O Prophet of Allah, your messenger came to me to take the zakat of my wealth, and by Allah, neither the Messenger of Allah nor his messenger has ever stood over my wealth before this. I gathered my wealth for him, but he claimed that what was due upon it was a bint makhad, and that is one which has neither milk nor strength for riding. I have presented to him a young, fat, large she-camel to take, but he refused. Here it is, I have brought it to you, O Messenger of Allah, so take it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "That is what was incumbent upon you, and if you offer it as a voluntary act of goodness, Allah will reward you for it, and we will accept it from you." He said: Here it is, O Messenger of Allah, I have brought it to you. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered that it be taken, and he prayed for him for blessing in his wealth. The ruling is the same if one gives an animal of a higher quality than what is required in terms of attributes, such as giving a fat animal instead of a lean one, a healthy one instead of a sick one, a high-bred one instead of a low-bred one, or a pregnant one instead of non-pregnant ones, for it is accepted from him.
