qutniyya; it is also pluralized as qatani. Abu 'Ubayd said: It refers to types of grains, such as lentils, chickpeas, rice, jarjir (also called juljulan, meaning sesame). Others added: millet, cowpeas, fava beans, and mung beans. It is called qutniyya (derived from the verb qatana), meaning to stay in the house, i.e., to remain in it. There is no disagreement among scholars regarding things other than grains and monetary assets (athman) that one genus is not added to another for the purpose of completing the nisab. Livestock consists of three genera: camels, cattle, and sheep, and no genus of them is added to another. As for fruits, one genus is not added to another; thus, dates are not added to raisins, nor to almonds or pistachios, and nothing from these is added to another. Monetary assets are not added to anything from grazing livestock, nor from grains and fruits. There is no disagreement among them that types within a genus are added to one another for the purpose of completing the nisab. Furthermore, we [know of no disagreement among them] that trade goods are added to monetary assets, and monetary assets are added to them, except that al-Shafi'i does not add them except to the genus of that with which they were purchased, because their nisab is considered accordingly. They disagreed regarding the addition of grains to one another, and the addition of one of the two precious metals to the other. Three reports are narrated from Ahmad regarding grains: one of them is that no genus of them is added to another, and the nisab is considered for each genus individually. This is the opinion of 'Ata', Makhul, Ibn Abi Layla, al-Awza'i, al-Thawri, al-Hasan ibn Salih, Sharik, al-Shafi'i, Abu 'Ubayd, Abu Thawr, and the People of Opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y); because they are [distinct] genera, the nisab was considered for each genus individually, like fruits.
