five awaq of silver." If he does not know the quantity of what is within it of both, and doubts whether it has reached the nisab or not, he is given the choice between melting them down to know the quantity of what is within them of both, or exercising caution and paying [it out] so that the obligation is discharged with certainty. If he chooses to pay out of caution, and intends to pay the Zakat from the adulterated gold/silver, one must look: if the adulteration does not vary, such as the adulteration being one-sixth of every dinar, and he knows this, it is permissible to pay from it because he would be paying a quarter of the tenth. If the quantity of what is in it varies, or is unknown, it is not valid to pay from it unless he exercises caution, such that he is certain that what he has paid of gold encompasses the amount of the Zakat. If he pays gold for it that has no adulteration, it is better. If he wishes to deduct the adulteration and pay the Zakat on the amount of gold contained within it—such as one who has twenty-four dinars, one-sixth of which is adulteration, so he removes the one-sixth [equivalent to] four [dinars] and pays half a dinar on the twenty—it is permissible; because if he were to melt it down, he would not be obligated to pay anything else. Furthermore, there is no Zakat on its adulteration unless it is silver, and he possesses [enough] silver to complete the nisab, or he possesses another nisab, in which case the Zakat on the adulteration would be due upon him then. The same applies if we hold the view of combining one of the two currencies with the other. If the owner of the wealth claims that he knew the [amount of] adulteration, or that he exercised caution and paid the obligation, his statement is accepted without an oath. If the value of the adulterated item increases due to the adulteration, such that the value of twenty becomes equal to twenty-two, he must pay a quarter of the tenth of it from that whose value is equivalent to its value; because he is obligated to pay the Zakat on good wealth from its own type, in a manner that does not decrease its value. And Allah knows best.
448 - Issue; he said: (And if it is complete, then in it is a quarter of the tenth)
This means if the silver is complete at two hundred, and the dinars at twenty, then the mandatory amount in them is a quarter of the tenth of them.
