Both were reported by al-Athram with his chain of narration (3). The ornamentation of a belt with silver is permitted, because it is an ornament customary for a man, and thus it is like a ring. It has been reported that this is disliked due to the pride and arrogance it entails, making it like a collar, but the first view is more appropriate because the collar is not customary (4) for a man, unlike the belt. By analogy to the belt are the cuirass (5), the helmet, the khuff (leather boot), the ra'an (6), and the shoulder belts. Silver is permitted in vessels and similar items out of need, and by need we mean that it is utilized for that purpose, even if something else could serve the same function. In "Sahih al-Bukhari" (7), it is reported from Anas that the bowl of the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) broke, so he took a silver chain in place of the crack. The Qadi said: A small amount is permitted, even if it is not out of necessity. Ahmad only disliked the hoop in a vessel because it is used. As for gold, whatever necessity dictates is permitted, such as a nose for one whose nose has been severed, based on what was narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Tarafah that his grandfather, Arfajah ibn As'ad (8), had his nose cut off on the day of al-Kulab (9), so he fashioned a nose made of silver, but it became putrid, so the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him, and he fashioned a nose from gold. Reported by Abu Dawud (10). Imam Ahmad said: Binding teeth
