Translation · EN

which is six hundred dirhams, is one ratl (27) and a seventh, and the seventh is an uqiyya and five-sevenths of an uqiyya. The measure of that in dirhams is six hundred dirhams [and eighty-five dirhams and five-sevenths of a dirham] (28). It is sufficient to give out a mudd (29) in the Damascene measure from all categories, because it is larger than the sa'. I have seen a mudd that was mentioned to us as being the mudd of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Damascene mudd was estimated by it, and the Damascene mudd held (30) close to five [of them. And Allah knows best] (31).

468 - Issue: He said: (From every grain and fruit that serves as staple food)

He means that in the absence of the categories specifically mentioned, it is sufficient to provide any staple food from grains and fruits. The outward implication of this is that it is not sufficient to provide what is staple food from other than them, such as meat and milk. Abu Bakr said: One should provide that which serves the role of the categories mentioned in the text when they are absent. Ibn Hamid said: It is sufficient in their absence to provide what is eaten as staple food, such as millet, sorghum, and the meat of fish and livestock, and they are not restricted to the nearest staple food of the major cities.

469 - Issue: He said: (If the people of the desert give a sa' of dried yogurt (aqit), it suffices if it is their staple food)

Most scholars mandate Zakat al-Fitr upon the people of the desert. This is narrated from Ibn al-Zubayr, and it is the opinion of Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, al-Hasan, Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ibn al-Mundhir, and the People of Opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y).
