‘A’ishah, in a hadith: "The Sunnah for the one performing I'tikaf is that he should not leave except for human necessity, and there is no I'tikaf except in a mosque where congregation is held." Abu ‘Abd Allah held the view that in every mosque where congregation is performed, it is permissible to perform I'tikaf, and it is not permissible in other than it. It has been narrated from Hudhayfah, ‘A’ishah, and Al-Zuhri what points to this. Abu Qilabah and Sa'id ibn Jubayr performed I'tikaf in the mosque of their neighborhood. It has been narrated from ‘A’ishah and Al-Zuhri that it is not valid except in congregational mosques. This is the opinion of Al-Shafi'i, if his I'tikaf is interrupted by a Friday prayer, so that he does not commit himself to leaving his place of I'tikaf, given that it is possible for him to avoid leaving for it. It has been narrated from Hudhayfah and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib: I'tikaf is not permissible except in a mosque of a Prophet. It was recounted from Hudhayfah that I'tikaf is not valid except in one of the three mosques. Sa'id said: Al-Mughirah related to us, from Ibrahim, who said: Hudhayfah entered the Mosque of Kufa and found structures built there, so he asked about them. It was said: "A group of people performing I'tikaf." He went to Ibn Mas'ud and said: "Are you not surprised by a people who claim they are performing I'tikaf between your house and the house of Al-Ash'ari?" ‘Abd Allah replied: "Perhaps they were right and you were wrong, and they remembered and you forgot." Hudhayfah said: "I have known that I'tikaf is only [valid] in three mosques: the Sacred Mosque, the Furthest Mosque, and the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)" (5). Malik said: I'tikaf is valid in every mosque, due to the generality of His saying, the Exalted: "...while you are observing I'tikaf in the mosques" (6). This is also the opinion of Al-Shafi'i if his I'tikaf is not interrupted by a Friday prayer. As for us, [we rely on] the statement of ‘A’ishah: "It is from the Sunnah for the one performing I'tikaf that he should not leave except for human necessity, and there is no I'tikaf except in a mosque where congregation is held." It has also been said that this is the statement of Al-Zuhri. It
