due to the absence of that in it. As for our evidence, there is the hadith of Aisha from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "There is no zakat on wealth until a year has passed over it." Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Ibn Umar that he said: Whoever acquires wealth, there is no zakat on it until a year has passed over it. It was also narrated as a marfu' (elevated) report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), except that [Al-Tirmidhi] said: The mawquf (stopped at the Companion) report is more authentic, and it was only elevated by Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, who is weak. It has been narrated from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Ali, Ibn Umar, Aisha, Ata, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, Salim, and Al-Nakha'i that there is no zakat on acquired wealth (mustafad) until a year has passed over it. Furthermore, it is originally owned property, so a year is considered a condition for it, just like wealth acquired from a different category. These assets are not analogous to crops and fruits, because the latter [reach maturity] all at once; this is why zakat on them does not recur, whereas these [monetary] assets grow through their circulation, and thus they require a year. As for profits and offspring, they were added to their principal because they are dependent upon it and generated from it, and that is not found in our current issue. Even if we were to concede that the cause for adding them is what they mentioned regarding hardship, that is not found in our issue, because profits increase and recur during the days and hours, and it is difficult to track them, as is the case with offspring. They may even exist without one being aware of them, so the hardship in that is more complete due to the frequency of their recurrence, unlike these independent reasons.
