It is at al-Aqabah, which is why it is called Jamrat al-Aqabah. He throws seven pebbles at it, saying the takbir with every pebble, while positioning himself in the bottom of the valley, facing the Qiblah, then he leaves and does not stop. In its entirety, this is the position of those among the scholars whose view we know. If one throws at it from above it, it is permissible, for Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came when there was crowding at the Jamrah, so he climbed (3) and threw at it from above it. However, the first way is better, because Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid narrated that he walked with Abd Allah while he was throwing at the Jamrah; when he was in the bottom of the valley, he turned towards it (4) and threw at it. He was told: Some people are throwing at it from above it. He replied: By Him besides Whom there is no god, I saw the one upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed throwing at it from here. Agreed upon (6). In another wording: When Abd Allah came to Jamrat al-Aqabah, he descended into the bottom of the valley, faced the Qiblah, and began throwing at the Jamrah towards his right side, then he threw seven pebbles, and said: By Allah, besides Whom there is no god, the one upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed threw at it from here. Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a sound (sahih) hadith, and the practice of the majority of scholars is based upon it. Standing by it is not a Sunnah; because Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) threw at Jamrat al-Aqabah, he would leave and not stand.
