By what have you entered into ihram?" I said: "I have said 'Labbayk' with the same entering into ihram as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." He said: "You have done well." He then commanded me, so I performed tawaf around the House and [sa'i] between al-Safa and al-Marwa, then he said to me: "Exit the state of ihram." Agreed upon (9). From Jabir, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), when he performed sa'i between al-Safa and al-Marwa, said: "Whoever [among you is not] (10) accompanied by a sacrificial animal, let him exit the state of ihram, and let him make it an 'Umrah." Narrated by Muslim (11). From Suraqah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When you arrive, whoever circumambulates the House and [performs sa'i] between al-Safa and al-Marwa has exited the state of ihram, except for those who have a sacrificial animal with them." Narrated by Abu Ishaq al-Jawzjani in "Al-Mutarjam" (12). This is because what was prohibited during ihram, when it is rendered permissible, becomes a release from a prohibition, just like all other prohibitions of ihram. However, the first narration is more correct, for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded it. Ibn Umar narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever is not accompanied by a sacrificial animal, let him circumambulate the House and [perform sa'i] between al-Safa and al-Marwa, then shorten [his hair], and then exit the state of ihram" (13). And from Jabir, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Exit your state of ihram (14) by performing tawaf around the House [and between al-Safa] (14) and al-Marwa, and shorten [your hair]" (15). His command implies obligation. Furthermore, Allah the Almighty described them as performing it in His saying, Exalted is He: "Shaving your heads and shortening [them]" (16). If it were not a religious rite (nusuk), He would not have described them with it, unlike clothing or killing game. Moreover, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) invoked mercy upon those who shave three times, and upon those who shorten once; if it were not one of
