Section: It is a Sunnah for the Imam to deliver a sermon in Mina on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr), in which he teaches the people their rituals concerning the sacrifice, the circumambulation of arrival (ifadah), and the stoning (of the Jamarat). Imam Ahmad explicitly stated this, and it is the school of al-Shafi'i and Ibn al-Mundhir. Some of our companions mentioned that he does not deliver a sermon on that day, which is the school of Malik, because it is Sunnah on the day before it, so it is not Sunnah on this day. Our evidence is what Ibn 'Abbas narrated, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered a sermon to the people on the Day of Sacrifice, meaning in Mina. Recorded by al-Bukhari. (24) From Rafi' ibn 'Amr al-Muzani who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivering a sermon to the people in Mina when the forenoon had advanced, riding a gray mule, while 'Ali was conveying (25) his speech to others, and the people were between standing and sitting. Abu Umamah said: I heard the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Mina on the Day of Sacrifice. Al-Hirmas ibn Ziyad al-Bahili said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivering a sermon to the people on his she-camel, al-'Adba' (26), on the Day of Sacrifice in Mina. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mu'adh said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered a sermon to us while we were in Mina, and our hearing was opened so that we could hear while we were in our quarters. He began to teach them their rituals until he reached the stoning. All these hadiths were recorded by Abu Dawud (27), except for the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas. This is because it is a day in which the acts of Hajj are numerous, and there is a need to teach the people the rulings concerning them, so a sermon is necessary for its sake, just like the day of 'Arafah.
(24) In: Chapter on the Sermon during the days of Mina, from the Book of Hajj. Sahih al-Bukhari 2/215. (25) "Conveying his speech": meaning, he was transmitting his words to those who were far from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). (26) Al-'Adba': The one with a clipped ear. And the fourth, in: Chapter on what the Imam mentions in his sermon in Mina, from the Book of Hajj. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/453. It was also recorded by al-Nasa'i, in: Chapter on what was mentioned regarding Mina, from the Book of Manasik. al-Mujtaba 5/200. And Imam Ahmad, in: al-Musnad 4/61.
