The thaniyy of cattle is one that is two years old, and the thaniyy of camels is one that is five years old. This is the opinion held by Malik, al-Layth, al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, and the people of opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y). Ibn Umar and al-Zuhri said: 'Nothing suffices except the thaniyy of everything.' Ata' and al-Awza'i said: 'The jadha' of all animals suffices, except for goats.' Our argument against al-Zuhri is what was narrated from Umm Bilal bint Hilal, from her father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The jadha' of sheep is permitted as a sacrifice (udhiyya)." From Asim ibn Kulayb, who said: 'We were with a man from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called Mujashi', of the Banu Sulaym. Sheep became scarce, so he ordered a herald to call out: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: 'The jadha' fulfills what the thaniyya fulfills.'" From Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not slaughter anything but a musinna (a mature animal), unless it is difficult for you, then slaughter a jadha' of sheep." Ibn Majah narrated these. Muslim and Abu Dawud also narrated the hadith of Jabir (2). This is evidence against Ata' and al-Awza'i. [Also the evidence is] the hadith of Abu Burda ibn Niyar, when he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a jadha' 'anaq (young female goat), it is better than two meat-producing sheep." He replied: "It suffices for you, but it will not suffice for anyone after you." Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i recorded it (3). In one wording: "I have..."
