Bilal came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with some Barni dates (8). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him, "From where did you get this, O Bilal?" He replied, "We had some poor quality dates, so I sold two sa's [of it] for one [sa of good quality], so that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) might eat thereof." The Prophet said, "Oh, the essence of Riba! The essence of Riba (9)! Do not do so. Rather, if you wish to buy [good quality dates], sell the [poor quality] dates in a separate transaction, then buy [the good ones] with its proceeds." Recorded by both [Bukhari and Muslim] (10). Al-Tirmidhi said: The practice among the scholars from the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and others is in accordance with the hadith of Abu Sa'id. The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "There is no Riba except in Nasi'ah," is interpreted as applying to the two categories [of Riba].
704 - Issue: Abu al-Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: (Everything that is measured by volume or weighed among all other items, it is not permissible for there to be an excess [in exchange] if it is of the same genus.)
His saying: "among all other items" means all of them. He used "sa'ir" (the rest of) in place of "jami'" (all) metaphorically, whereas its original meaning is for the remainder of a thing. Many hadiths have been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding Riba, and among the most complete is what was narrated by 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that he said: "Gold for gold, equal for equal; silver for silver, equal for equal; dates for dates, equal for equal; wheat for wheat, equal for equal; salt for salt, equal for equal; and barley for barley, equal for equal.
