and occupies himself with that which has no benefit away from knowledge and worship. The reports are understood as applying to one who possesses desire, due to the contextual evidence within them indicating as much. The apparent position of Ahmad is that there is no difference between one who is capable of providing financial support and one who is incapable of it. He said: "It is appropriate for a man to marry. If he has something to spend, he spends it, and if he does not have anything, he is patient; and if a human being were to marry, his affair would be complete." He argued that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would wake up having nothing, and he would go to sleep having nothing. Furthermore, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married off a man who could not afford even an iron ring, and he found nothing but his lower garment and possessed no upper garment. Al-Bukhari recorded this. Ahmad said regarding a man with little earnings whose heart grows weak regarding dependents: "Allah provides for them; marriage is more protective for him, for a time may come upon him when he does not possess his own heart." This pertains to one for whom marriage is possible; as for one for whom it is not possible, Allah Almighty has said: "But let those who find not the financial means for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah enriches them of His bounty" (Surat An-Nur: 33).
