Translation · EN

"And were it not for the red wheat, your maidens would not have fattened." Ahmad also said: "It is recommended to beat the duff and to make sound (57) during the announcement of the marriage." It was said to him: "What is the sound?" He replied: "That it is spoken of, talked about, and made apparent." The basis for this is what Muhammad ibn Hatib narrated, saying: The Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The boundary between the lawful and the unlawful is the sound and the duff in marriage." Narrated by Al-Nasa'i (58). He (peace be upon him) also said: "Announce the marriage," and in another wording: "Make the marriage public." He liked (59) that the duff be beaten at it (60), and in another wording: "And beat it with the mirbal (tambourine/hand drum)" (61). From Aisha, that she married off an orphan to a man from the Ansar, and Aisha was among those who escorted her to her husband. She said: "When we returned, the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to us: 'What did you say, O Aisha?'" She said: "We greeted and invoked blessings, then we left." He said: "Indeed, the Ansar are a people who have a penchant for poetry, would that you had said, O Aisha: 'We have come to you, we have come to you, so greet us and we shall greet you'" (62). All of this was narrated by Abu Abd Allah Ibn Majah in his Sunan. Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "There is no harm in the duff at a wedding or a circumcision, but I dislike the tabl (drum), which is the prohibited instrument (al-munkar), and it is the kubah (a type of drum) which the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade (63) (64) (65)."
