96 - Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me, from Hishām ibn Muḥammad, that Zayd ibn Ṣūḥān had his hand severed in one of the conquests of Iraq, so he smiled while blood was gushing out. A man from his people said to him, "This is no occasion for smiling!"

So Zayd said: "A pain has befallen, made light by God's reward for it. Should I then follow it with the pain of panic, in which there is no benefit and with which nothing lost can be retrieved? Moreover, in my smiling there is comfort for some among the believers who seek an example."

Whereupon the man said, "You know more about God than I do."
