99 - ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasayn narrated to me, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād ibn Ṭalḥa, who said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥumayd al-Thaqafī mention from his father—who was among the guards of al-Ḥajjāj—saying: When Ḥuṭayṭ was brought and al-Ḥajjāj spoke to him, he ordered that he be tortured.

He said: So his torturer took him out and said, "O Ḥuṭayṭ, you know what the commander ordered me to do to you, so what have you prepared for it?"

So Ḥuṭayṭ said to him: "May your mother be bereft of you! You obey him in disobedience to God and sell your Hereafter for his worldly life! You are among those who lose both this world and the Hereafter, so ruin be upon you until the end of time!"

He said, "What have you prepared for that, O Ḥuṭayṭ, for what he ordered me to do to you?"

When he kept repeating it to him, he said: "May your mother be bereft of you! I have prepared for that what God promised: the completion of rewards without measure. By God, I have prepared for it patience until God's decree and predestination are fulfilled concerning me."

He said: So he was tortured with various kinds of torment, yet he did not utter a single word, until, when his soul was near departing, he was taken out and thrown onto a rubbish heap. People gathered around him and began saying to him, "O Ḥuṭayṭ, say: There is no god but God." So he began moving his lips with it without uttering clear speech, then his soul departed.
