102 - ʿAlī ibn Muslim narrated to me, Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, “that al-Ḥajjāj cut off the hand and foot of a man, then ordered that he be carried to Kufa to be crucified at his door. He said: So he was carried in a ship, until when they approached Kufa—and among them was a man who seemed to hear a rustling—he said: ‘What is the matter with you?’ They said: ‘This is the place where we were ordered to crucify you, so we fear that you will throw yourself into the water.’ He said: ‘I throw myself? By God, a fly alights upon my hand or my foot and I dislike to scratch it out of fear of helping against myself.’ He said: And they heard him supplicating: ‘O God, I seek refuge in You from fleeing from the severity of people to Your severity, and I seek refuge in You from making the trial of people like Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You lest people see good in me while there is no good in me. O God, intend good for me and bring it about for me; indeed, You do whatever You intend.’”
