130 - ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us, saying: A man once said: "I shall surely test the afflicted people." He said: "So I entered upon a man in Ṭarsūs whose limbs gangrene had eaten away. I said: 'How are you this morning?' He said: 'I have awoken, by God, while every single limb of mine hurts individually from pain; if the Byzantines in their polytheism and disbelief were to look upon me, they would pity me for what I am in. Yet that is under the eye of God; what is most beloved to me is what is most beloved to God. And what is the value of that which my Lord has taken from me? I wish that my Lord had severed from me the fingertips with which I committed sin, and that nothing remained of me except my tongue to be in His remembrance.' He said: So the man said to him: 'When did this illness begin with you?' He said: 'Is it not enough for you? All creation are the servants and dependents of God, so when you see dependency among the servants, complaint is to God; God is not to be complained of to the servants.'"
