132 - ʿAlī ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Salām al-Jumaḥī who said: I heard Yaḥyā ibn ʿUmar al-Ḥanafī mention from a man of Banū Ḥanīfa who said: "They wanted to seek treatment for an old man of theirs who had an illness requiring treatment, but he refused and said: 'I have found that Allah has bestowed upon the people of patience a gift that He has not bestowed upon any other of His servants.'" It was said: "What is it, may Allah have mercy on you?" He said: I heard Him say, blessed be His Name: {Only those who are patient will be given their reward without account} [al-Zumar: 10], so I would never trade that for anything. He said: So he did not seek treatment, and whenever the pain intensified for him, he would say: "Sufficient for me is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs," so the pain would subside from him, and he would find lightness and calm.
