146 - ʿAlī ibn Abī Maryam narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn: Ḥakīm ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, he said: I heard Mismaʿ ibn ʿĀṣim say: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Zayd said to me: "Whoever intends patience in obedience to Allah, Allah will grant him patience in it and strengthen him for it; and whoever resolves upon patience in refraining from acts of disobedience to Allah, Allah will assist him in that and protect him from them." He said: And he said to me: "O Sayyār! Do you think that you refrain patiently from your desire out of love for Him, and then your patience ends in disappointment? Indeed, he has harbored an evil thought about his Master who thinks this or the like of it about Him." He said: Then ʿAbd al-Wāḥid wept until I feared he would faint, then he said: "May my father be sacrificed for you, O Mismaʿ! His favors come and go evening and morning upon the people of His disobedience; so how could the people of His love despair of His mercy?"
