149 - ʿAlī ibn Abī Maryam narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn: Ḥakīm ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, saying: Qurra al-Naḥḥāt narrated to me, saying: I said to a worshipper in Bayt al-Maqdis: "Advise me." He said: "You must adhere to patience, practicing patience, and steadfast endurance." He said: I asked: "What is patience, what is practicing patience, and what is steadfast endurance?" He said: "As for patience, it is submission and contentment when afflictions and trials descend, and preparing the soul for them before their occurrence. As for practicing patience, it is swallowing their bitterness when they occur, and striving against the self to maintain its calm and tranquility. As for steadfast endurance, it is meeting the afflictions and trials that descend with cheerfulness and gladness, and awaiting what has not yet descended with reflection and thought. If a servant is like that, he is steadfastly enduring, unconcerned by whatever of that has preceded."

I found in some works of wisdom: Patience is of ten forms: patience in refraining from acts of disobedience, patience in performing obligatory duties, patience in avoiding doubtful matters, patience in poverty, patience in ailments, patience in afflictions, patience against harm from people, patience in refraining from desires, patience in refraining from superfluous speech, and patience in performing voluntary acts. Every action among these forms that you perform while it is burdensome upon you, you are patient therein; and every action among them that you perform without hardship, that is not from the domain of patience, but rather it is from the fine assistance from Allah, Glorified be He, to His servant, sparing him the burden of hardship and letting him taste the sweetness of divine aid.
