196 - Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī narrated to me: Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd al-Ḥaḏḏāʾ al-Ḥimṣī narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Ḥimyar narrated to us, from Maslama ibn ʿAlī, from ʿUmar ibn Ḏarr, from Abū Qilāba, from Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī, from Abū ʿUbayda ibn al-Jarrāḥ, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, took hold of his beard, and I recognized grief on his face, and said: "Indeed to Allah we belong, and indeed to Him we shall return. Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to me just now and said: 'Indeed to Allah we belong, and indeed to Him we shall return.' I said: 'Yes, indeed to Allah we belong, and indeed to Him we shall return. Why is that, O Gabriel?' He said: 'Your nation will fight one another after you in a short span of time, not long.' I said: 'From where, while I am leaving among them the Book of Allah?' He said: 'By the Book of Allah they will stray, and that is on account of their leaders and reciters. The leaders will withhold from the people their rights, so they will demand them but will not be given them, thus they will fight one another. And the reciters will follow the leaders, aiding them in error without desisting.' I said: 'How will those who remain safe among them be saved?' He said: 'By restraint and patience: if they are given what is rightfully theirs, they take it, and if they are denied it, they refrain.'"
