Khalaf said: So I mentioned that to a man among them surnamed Abū Maymūn, who was a wise man, and he said: "O Abū Ismāʿīl, patience has conditions." I said: "What are they, O Abū Maymūn?" He said: "Indeed, among the conditions of patience is that you know how to endure, for whose sake you endure, and what you seek through your patience; that you seek reward from God in it and maintain a good intention in it, so that your patience may be purely for Him. Otherwise, you are merely like a beast upon which affliction descended, so it agitated, then the affliction subsided, so it calmed down. It neither understood what befell it so as to seek reward and endure with patience, nor did it endure with patience, nor did it recognize the blessing when its affliction subsided so as to praise God for that and give thanks."
