9 - Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, saying: Sulaymān ibn al-Ḥakam ibn ʿAwāna narrated to us, saying: ʿUtba ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, from someone who narrated to him, from Qabīṣa ibn Jābir, who said: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may God be pleased with him, said: “Patience rests on four branches: on longing, fear, asceticism (zuhd), and anticipation. So whoever longs for Paradise becomes indifferent to desires; whoever fears the Hellfire turns away from forbidden things; whoever practices asceticism in this world views afflictions lightly; and whoever anticipates death hastens toward good deeds.”
