91 - 'Abd al-Malik al-Maymuni informed me, saying: Ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, saying: "When al-Walid ibn Yazid was killed, there was a man in Kufa who was originally from Kufa but had lived in Syria; he was sound of intellect. When the civil strife (fitna) broke out, he said to Khalaf ibn Hawshab: 'Gather those who remain and prepare food.' He gathered them, and Sulayman said: 'I am the warner to you: let a man restrain his hand, control his tongue, and tend to his heart.'"
92 - Then Mansur ibn al-Walid al-Naysaburi informed me, saying: al-Qasim ibn Muhammad al-Marwazi narrated to us, saying: Ahmad narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, and he mentioned the like of it, exactly. Al-Qasim said: Ahmad said: 'Look at al-A'mash, how excellent is what he said, despite his quickness and intensity of anger.'"
٩١ - أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْمَيْمُونِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا ابْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: " لَمَّا قُتِلَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ كَانَ بِالْكُوفَةِ رَجُلٌ كَانَ يَكُونُ بِالشَّامِ أَصْلُهُ كُوفِيُّ سَدِيدٌ عَقْلُهُ، قَالَ لِخَلَفِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ لَمَّا وَقَعَتِ الْفِتْنَةُ: اجْمَعْ بَقِيَّةَ مَنْ بَقِيَ وَاصْنَعْ طَعَامًا، فَجَمَعَهُمْ، فَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ: «أَنَا لَكُمُ النَّذِيرُ، كَفَّ رَجُلٌ يَدَهُ، وَمَلَكَ لِسَانَهُ، وَعَالَجَ قَلْبَهُ» .
٩٢ - فَأَخْبَرَنِي مَنْصُورُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ⦗١٣٥⦘ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَحْمَدَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ سَوَاءً. قَالَ الْقَاسِمُ: قَالَ أَحْمَدُ: «انْظُرُوا إِلَى الْأَعْمَشِ، مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا قَالَ، مَعَ سُرْعَتِهِ وَشِدَّةِ غَضَبِهِ»
