102 - Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi informed us, saying: I heard Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] commanding [people] to refrain from bloodshed and vehemently condemning rebellion. He disapproved of the affair of Sahl ibn Salamah and said: "There was a bond of familiarity between me and Hamdun ibn Shabib, and he used to correspond for me. However, when he revolted with Sahl, I distanced myself from him thereafter. He had gone out to that side, so Ibn Muslim and I went and reproached him. I said: 'What prompted you [to do this]?' It was as if he felt remorse or returned [to the right path]."
