104 - Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi informed us, saying: Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Aziz al-Ammi narrated to us, saying: Abu Imran narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn al-Samit, from Abu Dharr, who said: 'I was behind the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) when he went out from the outskirts of Medina, and he said: "O Abu Dharr, what would you do if the people were killed until the stones of al-Zayt are flooded with blood?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Enter your house." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if they come upon me?" He said: "Go to those whom you belong to." I said: "Should I take up arms?" He said: "Then you would have participated with the people." I said: "What should I do, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "If you fear that the glint of the sword might dazzle you, then cast a part of your garment over your face, so that he may bear your sin and his own sin."'
