124 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abi 'Abdah narrated to us, saying: I asked Ahmad [ibn Hanbal], saying: 'What of the hadith of al-Zuhri: "The strife [fitnah] erupted while the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were numerous, and they reached a consensus that no retaliation [qisas] shall be sought, nor shall property be seized based on a misinterpretation of the Qur'an, except for what is found in its original state?"' He replied: 'Yes.' I asked: 'Does this apply to the Haruriyyah [Kharijites] and their like?' He replied: 'Yes.' I asked: 'As for thieves and brigands, they are not to be granted security for any of this; rather, they are to be held accountable for all of it?' He replied: 'Yes.'
