125 - Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to me, saying: Al-Athram narrated to us, saying: It was mentioned to Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal]: "The strife [fitnah] erupted while the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were numerous, and they held the view that all blood shed based on a misinterpretation of the Qur'an shall be exempted from liability [muhdar]." It was said to him: "Like the Haruriyyah?" He replied: "Yes." Abu 'Abd Allah said: "As for a highway robber [qati' tariq], that does not apply."
١٢٥ - حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْأَثْرَمُ، قَالَ: ذُكِرَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: «هَاجَتِ الْفِتْنَةُ وَأَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَوَافِرُونَ، فَرَأَوْا أَنْ يُهْدَرَ كُلُّ دَمِ أُصِيبَ عَلَى تَأْوِيلِ الْقُرْآنِ» ، قِيلَ لَهُ: مِثْلَ الْحَرُورِيَّةِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: فَأَمَّا قَاطِعُ طَرِيقٍ فَلَا "
