127 - Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah al-Asbahani informed me, saying: al-Hasan ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn al-Farah, who said: Sufyan said: al-Zuhri said: "The fitna (strife) occurred while the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) were numerous. They did not consider there to be any retribution [qisas] for wealth or blood taken during the interpretation of the Qur'an, nor during a fitna. That is because of their poor state; they placed them in the position of the Jahiliyya (Pre-Islamic period), which has no Imam, and it is through the Imam that the legal punishments [hudud] are established." And the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Every blood shed during the Jahiliyya is under my feet."
