16 - Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi informed us, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal], when he mentioned the Caliph al-Mutawakkil—may Allah have mercy on him—saying: "I truly pray for his righteousness and well-being," and he said: "If any misfortune were to befall him, you would surely see what would befall Islam."
١٦ - وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، وَذَكَرَ الْخَلِيفَةَ الْمُتَوَكِّلَ، رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ: " إِنِّي لَأَدْعُو لَهُ بِالصَّلَاحِ وَالْعَافِيَةِ، وَقَالَ: لَئِنْ حَدَثَ بِهِ حَدَثٌ لَتَنْظُرَنَّ مَا يَحِلُّ بِالْإِسْلَامِ "
