186 - Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan informed me, saying: Ibrahim ibn al-Harith narrated to us, saying: It was said to Abu ‘Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal]: A man is in a land experiencing civil strife (fitnah). [180] And al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan informed me that Muhammad narrated to them, saying: I asked Abu ‘Abd Allah and said: A man is in a land experiencing civil strife, and someone comes upon him in his house at night. He said: "I hope that if the sanctity [of his home] is violated and someone enters his dwelling [he may defend himself]." It was said: What about the one who uses the example of ‘Uthman—may Allah have mercy on him—that he was entered upon? He said: "That is a virtue specific to ‘Uthman. But as for when he enters his house and the sanctities are violated..." It was said: Should he defend himself? He seemed to see no harm in it, and said: "Ibn ‘Umar drew his sword against a thief." He said: "If he had left him, he would have killed him," and he mentioned to him the [prohibition of] entreating the thief in matters other than civil strife. Then he said: "The hadith of Qabus from Salman—he did not deem it authentic—and he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Whoever is fought and fights [back], then is killed defending his wealth, he is a martyr.'"
