54 - Muhammad informed us, saying: Waki' informed us, from Sufyan, from Ibrahim ibn 'Abd al-A'la, from Suwayd ibn Ghaflah, who said: 'Umar said to me: "O Abu Umayyah, I do not know; perhaps I will not meet you after this year of mine. So if a Habashi (Abyssinian) slave with mutilated extremities is appointed as a ruler over you, then listen to him and obey. If he beats you, then be patient; if he denies you your rights, then be patient; and if he desires a matter that would diminish your religion, say: 'I hear and obey; my blood is sacrificed for the sake of my religion,' and do not depart from the Jama'ah (the community)."
