61 - Muhammad informed us, saying: Waki' informed us, from Ibn Abi Khalid, from Qays, who said: "Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah was in an army and he sought the enemy. One of his companions was afflicted by the snow, and part of his body was damaged, so he killed him. This news reached 'Umar, who said: 'O Jarir, are you listening to what has reached me?' He (Jarir) replied: 'I praise Allah to you, O Commander of the Faithful. It was said to me: "They are with you, they are with you [meaning they are your responsibility]," and he was afflicted with what he was afflicted with.' 'Umar then said: 'Are you listening? Verily, whoever makes a public spectacle [in order to be seen or heard by people], Allah will make a public spectacle of him.'"
