554 - I read to him: 'Affan said: Hammad, meaning Ibn Salamah, narrated to us, he said: 'Asim ibn Bahdalah narrated to us [390], from Abu Wa'il, that 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud traveled from Medina to Mecca in eight [days] when 'Uthman was appointed Caliph. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "To proceed: The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, has died—may Allah have mercy on him—and we did not see a day of more weeping than that day. We, the companions of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gathered, and we did not spare anyone other than the best of us, one who possesses merit, so we pledged allegiance to the Commander of the Faithful, 'Uthman, and they pledged allegiance to him."
