609 - Al-‘Abbas ibn Muhammad, a freed slave of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, saying: Qurad narrated to us, saying: Sallam, meaning Ibn Miskin, narrated to us, from Al-Hasan, who said: When ‘Uthman—may the pleasure of Allah be upon him—was killed, the people came to ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar—may the pleasure of Allah be upon him—and said to him: "You are the leader of the people and the son of their leader, so come out with us so that we may pledge allegiance to you." Ibn ‘Umar said: "By Allah, as long as there is a soul in me, not a cupping-glass worth of blood will be shed on my account." They returned to him and said: "If you do not come out, we will kill you in your bed." He repeated to them the same words he had said the first time. Al-Hasan said: "The people strove (in their request), but they were unable to achieve anything."
