711 - Al-Duri informed us, saying: Qurad narrated to us, saying: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Humayd ibn Hilal, from 'Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal, who said: 'Abd Allah ibn Salam (may Allah have mercy on him) was near Medina, and he used to enter [the city] every Friday on a donkey; once the prayer was finished, he would depart. He said: When the people became agitated over the killing of 'Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him), he came and said: "O people, do not kill 'Uthman, and seek to appease him; for there is no nation that killed its prophet but that Allah never rectified their affairs until they shed the blood of seventy thousand [people], and no nation killed its caliph but that Allah never rectified their affairs until they shed the blood of forty thousand of them, and no nation was ruined until they raise the Qur'an against the authority." Sulayman said: I asked Humayd: "What does it mean to raise the Qur'an against the authority?" He replied: "Have you not seen the people of desires (Ahl al-Ahwa'), how they interpret the Qur'an in a way other than its [intended] interpretation, using it to cast aspersions upon the authority? So do not kill 'Uthman." But they refused. When they killed him, 'Abd Allah ibn Salam came and sat on the path of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy on him) until he reached him. He said to him: "O 'Ali, where are you headed?" He replied: "I am headed to Iraq." He said: "Return to the pulpit of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for if you leave it, you will never see it again." Some of those with him said: "Let us kill this man." 'Ali said: "Desist! This is 'Abd Allah ibn Salam, a righteous man from among us." 'Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal said: I was consulting him regarding the purchase of land next to his land. He said: "O 'Abd Allah, buy that land, for it has not been forty years without an event occurring within it." He said: Thus, the reconciliation of the people and their gathering occurred at the head of forty years from the migration of the Prophet to Medina."
