402 - Muhammad ibn Abi Harun informed me that Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Hani narrated to them, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] say: "If you had heard nothing from Abu Hammam but the hadith of 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, may Allah have mercy on him, it would have sufficed you." Abu Hammam narrated to us, from Damrah ibn Rabi'ah, from 'Abd Allah ibn Shawdhab, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Qasim, from Kathir, the mawla of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Samurah, who said: "'Uthman came during the expedition of al-'Usrah (the time of hardship) with one thousand dinars, and he poured them into the lap of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Prophet began to put his hand into them and say: 'Nothing will harm Ibn 'Affan regardless of what he does after today; nothing will harm Ibn 'Affan regardless of what he does after today.'"
