418 - 'Abd al-Malik informed me, saying: Ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Ibn Mahdi narrated to us, saying: Mu'awiya ibn Salih narrated to us, from Rabi'a ibn Yazid, from 'Abd Allah ibn Qays, that al-Nu'man ibn Bashir narrated from 'A'isha, who said: "O my son, shall I not tell you something I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him?" I said: "Yes." She said: "Hafsa and I were one day with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he said: 'If only we had a man here to talk to us.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I send for Abu Bakr?' He remained silent, then said: 'No.' Then he said: 'If only we had a man here to talk to us.' Hafsa said: 'Shall I send for 'Umar?' He remained silent, then said: 'No.' Then he summoned a man and whispered something to him. No sooner had 'Uthman arrived than the Prophet turned his face and his attention toward him. I heard him say: 'Allah may clothe you in a garment; if they wish you to remove it, do not remove it,' [repeating this] three times." I said: "O Mother of the Believers, where have you been regarding this hadith?" She said: "O my son, by Allah, I had forgotten it to the point that I did not even think I had heard it."
