421 - 'Abd al-Malik informed me, saying: Ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Waki' narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Mundhir, from Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who said: 'Ali was at Ahjar al-Zayt. He said: It was said to him, "This man [i.e., 'Uthman] is being killed." He said: So he went and controlled us. He said: We said, "The people intend to hold you hostage." So he took a black turban of his and threw it to them, then said, "O Allah, I did not kill him, nor did I assist in his killing."
