425 - 'Abd al-Malik informed me, saying: Ibn Hanbal narrated to us, saying: Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Ayyub narrated to us, from Abu Qilabah, who said: When 'Uthman was killed, speakers stood up in Iliya' (Jerusalem). A man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), known as Murrah ibn Ka'b, was the last of them to stand. He said: "Were it not for a Hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I would not have stood up. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned a fitnah (tribulation) — I think he said: 'And he brought it near'" (the doubt being from Isma'il). "Then a man covered in his garment passed by, and he said: 'This man and his companions will be upon the truth on that day.' I went and took him by his shoulders, then turned his face towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: 'This one?' He replied: 'Yes.'" He said: "And it was 'Uthman ibn 'Affan."
