433 - 'Abd al-Malik informed me, saying: Ibn Hanbal narrated to us, Isma'il narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, that Thumamah ibn Hazn, a man from Quraysh who was in charge of San'a', when news of the killing of 'Uthman reached him, he wept and wept at length. When he recovered, he said: "Today, prophethood has been stripped away." Ayyub said, when he stated: "The Caliphate of Prophethood has been stripped away from the Ummah of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and it has become a kingdom and a tyranny (jabriyyah). Whoever prevails over something devours it."
أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ، قَالَ: ثَنَا ابْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، أَنَّ ثُمَامَةَ بْنَ حَزْنٍ، رَجُلٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ كَانَ عَلَى صَنْعَاءَ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُ قَتْلُ عُثْمَانَ بَكَى فَأَطَالَ الْبُكَاءَ، فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ قَالَ: " الْيَوْمَ انْتُزِعَتِ النُّبُوَّةُ، قَالَ أَيُّوبُ إِذْ قَالَ: خِلَافَةُ النُّبُوَّةِ مِنْ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَصَارَتْ مُلْكًا وَجَبْرِيَّةً، فَمَنْ غَلَبَ عَلَى شَيْءٍ أَكَلَهُ "
