882 - Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Kahhal informed me that he said to Abu Abdullah: "Every newborn is born upon the fitra (innate nature)," what is its interpretation? He said: "It is the fitra that Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, created the people upon, [whether] miserable or happy." Abu Abdullah said: "A person asked me about this issue in Mecca, and he was a Qadari. When I answered him, it was as if I had shoved a stone into his mouth."
٨٨٢ - أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْكَحَّالُ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: «كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ» ، مَا تَفْسِيرُهَا؟ قَالَ: " هِيَ الْفِطْرَةُ الَّتِي فَطَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهِ، شَقِيُّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ، وَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: سَأَلَنِي عَنْ هَذِهِ الْمَسْأَلَةِ إِنْسَانٌ بِمَكَّةَ، وَكَانَ قَدَرِيًّا، فَلَمَّا قُلْتُ لَهُ كَأَنِّي أَلْقَمْتُهُ حَجَرًا "
