Translation · EN

909 - 'Ismah ibn 'Isam informed me, saying: Hanbal narrated to us, saying: I said to Abu 'Abd Allah: 'Some people argue using this verse: {Whatever of good reaches you is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you is from yourself} [An-Nisa': 79].' Abu 'Abd Allah said: 'Whatever of good reaches you is from Allah, and whatever of evil befalls you is from yourself, yet Allah has decreed it.'

٩٠٩ - أَخْبَرَنِي عِصْمَةُ بْنُ عِصَامٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا حَنْبَلٌ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: إِنَّ قَوْمًا يَحْتَجُّونَ بِهَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {مَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ، وَمَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِنْ نَفْسِكَ} [النساء: ٧٩] ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: «مَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ، وَمَا أَصَابَكَ مِنْ سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِنْ نَفْسِكَ، وَاللَّهُ قَضَاهَا»
