931 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Samad al-Muqri' al-Massisi informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Sahm al-Antaki narrated to us, saying: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari informed me, saying: Al-Awza'i said to me: "Two men came to me and asked me about al-qadar (divine decree), and I wanted to bring them to you so that you could hear their speech and answer them." I said: "May Allah have mercy on you, you are more worthy of answering them." He said: So al-Awza'i came to me with the two men and said: "Speak." They said: "People from the adherents of al-qadar came to us, and they disputed with us regarding al-qadar, and we disputed with them, until the debate between us and them led us to say: 'Verily, Allah has compelled us to do what He forbade us from, and He has stood between us and what He commanded us to do, and He has provided us with what He has prohibited for us.'" He (al-Awza'i) said: "Answer them, O Abu Ishaq." I said: "May Allah have mercy on you, you are more worthy of answering them." He said: "Answer them." So I disliked disagreeing with him and said: "O you people, those who came to you with what they brought have innovated and produced a novelty, and I see that you have moved from (their) innovation to the likes of what they moved toward." He (al-Awza'i) said: "You have hit the mark and done well, O Abu Ishaq."
٩٣١ - أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ الْمُقْرِئُ الْمِصِّيصِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَهْمٍ الْأَنْطَاكِيُّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي الْفَزَارِيُّ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: قَالَ لِيَ الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ: أَتَانِي رَجُلَانِ فَسَأَلَانِي عَنِ الْقَدَرِ، فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ آتِيَكَ بِهِمَا تَسْمَعُ كَلَامَهُمَا، وَتُجِيبُهُمَا: قُلْتُ: رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ، أَنْتَ أَوْلَى بِالْجَوَابِ، قَالَ: فَأَتَانِي الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، وَمَعَهُ الرَّجُلَانِ، فَقَالَ: تَكَلَّمَا، فَقَالَا: قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا نَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْقَدَرِ، فَنَازَعُونَا فِي الْقَدَرِ وَنَازَعْنَاهُمْ، حَتَّى بَلَغَ بِنَا وَبِهِمُ الْجَوَابُ إِلَى أَنْ قُلْنَا: إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ جَبَرَنَا عَلَى مَا نَهَانَا عَنْهُ، وَحَالَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ مَا أَمَرَنَا بِهِ، وَرَزَقَنَا مَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْنَا ⦗٥٥٥⦘، فَقَالَ: أَجِبْهُمَا يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ، قُلْتُ: رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ، أَنْتَ أَوْلَى بِالْجَوَابِ، قَالَ: أَجِبْهُمَا، فَكَرِهْتُ خِلَافَهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا هَؤُلَاءِ، إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أَتَوْكُمْ بِمَا أَتَوْكُمْ قَدِ ابْتَدَعُوا وَأَحْدَثُوا حَدَثًا، وَإِنِّي أَرَاكُمْ قَدْ خَرَجْتُمْ مِنَ الْبِدْعَةِ إِلَى مِثْلِ مَا خَرَجُوا إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: أَصَبْتَ وَأَحْسَنْتَ يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ
